How to change guitar strings.

You know that its time to change guitar strings when they start to buzz or wear off. There are different methods for different guitars. Acoustic guitars, classical guitars and electric guitars have different methods of holding the strings and so there are different methods for each of them. In this post, I’ll show you how to change the strings of acoustic guitars and classical guitars.

Remember that acoustic guitars and classical guitars have different strings. Acoustic guitars use steel strings which are harder and puts more tension. Classical guitars use nylon strings which are softer. You cannot use steel strings on classical guitars since the steel strings will put too much tension on the classical guitar and could damage the neck of the guitar. Similarly, you cannot use nylon strings on acoustic guitars since they will be too light for the acoustic guitars and damage the neck.

CHANGING THE STRINGS OF ACOUSTIC GUITARS.

1. First unwind the strings.

unwind the string

Unwind the strings until they are no longer under tension by rotating the tuning pegs. This is a slow process and takes time. If you want to make this process faster, you can buy an instrument called peg winder from your local guitar store or from online. Unwinding the strings will prevent the strings from snapping and hurting you and the guitar. So this step is necessary for safety. After unwinding the strings, remove them from the peg holes.

2. Remove the bridge pins.

remove bridge pins

Remove the bridge pins that hold the guitar strings on the bridge holes. You may use coins or other hard stuffs to remove the pins. You can either remove the pins from the outside or push the pins from inside the sound board or you can buy bridge pin pullers from a guitar store. The pins can be stubborn sometimes and so you need to be careful not to damage the bridge of your guitar. Also make sure that the stubborn pins don’t fly off when you pull them out.

3. Remove the strings from the bridge holes.

After the pins have been removed, pull out the strings from the bridge holes. The strings have small metal pegs wound at the bottom and can sometimes be stuck under the bridge holes. If you cannot pull out the strings from the outside, you can put your hands inside the sound hole and pull out the strings from the inside.

4. Put the new strings in the bridge holes and put back the bridge pins.

Unwind the loops that bind the strings to the bridge holes. Then pull out the strings.

3. Put the new string to the bridge holes and bind them.

Now put the new strings to the bridge holes one by one and bind them. The 4th, 5th and 6th strings can be bound with a simple single loop but the 1st, 2nd and 3rd strings need extra loop since they are slippery and thinner and can come off if you bind them with a single loop.
